What if there were a more comfortable way to examine the prostate. The first approach in prostate examination is to have your physician do a rectal exam by hand and if difficulty occurs then a pelvic ultrasound is performed to measure the size of the prostate followed by (if necessary) a digital prostate exam. This is when a manual or automated probe is inserted into the rectum to obtain images of the prostate regarding possible abnormality. This can be uncomfortable and very tedious as a biopsy is being performed.

With regard to prostate biopsies a procedure of less torture can be done by entering the prostate in the area of the lower abdomen, which is below the belly button. This incidentally is the same area used to remove the prostate either by surgical removal, laser or cryosurgery ect.

By using a stationary cytoscope in conjunction with a camera so that the physician performing the operation can actually view the prostate while performing the biopsy. The cytoscope will be equipped with an instrument inside that enables the physician to make an insicion inside the prostate and then extract tissue as part of the biopsy for examination. In doing so a biopsy can be performed with mininal discomfort to the patient. When biopsied tissue can be examined immediately, if cancerous the prostate can be removed that same day. This procedure is similar to a D and C.
