Solar panels convert existing sunlight into energy by the use of silicon to make solar cells. The solar panels collect solar radiation from the sun and converts that energy into electricity. The individual solar cells that make up the solar panels create electricity by the photovoltaic effect. This means that a voltage of electricity is created within the material of the silicon when exposed to sunlight(photon) or any light that creates electromagnetic radiation. As a result solar energy is created to use as electricity or electrical energy that is needed by being stored inside a battery for use when necessary, ie. you can operate a solar assisted product without a battery or electricity providing that you have sunlight to use for enegy. Once there is no sun available you need to use electricity or the battery that was charged by the energy provided from the solar panel. This would also include energy provided from artificial light.

The use of solar energy can be used to provide energy to mp3 players, cameras or portable video games. If solar panels were used in a variety of entertainment aspects, one could save a lot of money on batteries and the recharging of them. This is not to say that you will never use batteries again. The idea is to use the natural energy already provided via sunlight. If you are outdoors taking pictures,playing games and or listening to your mp3 player the sun is the cheapest resource of energy even if you just want to charge your battery while outdoors. Once an electronic is equipped for solar energy you have the ability to choose from your battery, when indoors or when the sun is not out and use the solar energy on bright sunny days. Now you will be able to enjoy music, pictures and video games throughout the day without interruption resulting from a low battery because you are equipped with solar access!
